Mammography Release Form
If detected early, breast cancer can be treated. The best way to stay in control of your breast health is by detecting breast changes early through monthly self exams, annual gynecologic exams and mammograms as recommended by your doctor.
3D Mammogram
It is recommended that women begin screening mammograms at age 40 and continue yearly thereafter. Your physician may recommend a screening mammogram before age 40 based on your risk factors for breast cancer. Your best defense against breast cancer is an annual mammogram, monthly breast self-examination, and an annual breast exam by your physician.
AMH uses advanced 3D mammography technology for our screening mammograms. A 3D mammography unit takes multiple images of the breast and uses computer reconstruction to create 3D images of the breast. The breast is compressed between a clear plastic paddle and an imaging detector and the X-ray tube moves in an arc over the breast, capturing different angles. Our radiologists can then scroll through all the images much like a book – one page at a time – to gain a better understanding of the structures inside your breast. Benefits of 3D mammography technology include:
It is more effective in finding breast cancer. 3D mammography has significantly higher detection rate for invasive breast cancer.
It results in fewer callbacks. Because 3D mammography is so thorough, fewer women are called back for additional imaging exams, resulting in less expense and anxiety for the patient.
It uses low-dose radiation, with a dosage comparable to the older 2D exam.
Mammograms are among the most powerful breast cancer detection tools available. The Ashe Memorial Hospital Mammography Suite is certified as a Pink Ribbon Facility.
Through the generosity of our donors and the Ashe Memorial Hospital Foundation, our imaging department is able to provide a select number of free mammograms for uninsured patients on select dates. Breast MRI
AMH now offers breast MRI. It offers valuable information about many breast conditions that other imaging modalities cannot obtain. Breast MRI uses an intravenous contrast agent that increases the visibility of breast cancer in the MRI image. Breast MRI is ordered for a number of reasons:
Screening for women at high risk of breast cancer. MRI may be the right screening tool for women with a strong family history or genetic predisposition to breast cancer. A strong family history might include a parent, sibling, or child who has had breast cancer before age 50 or close relatives that have had ovarian cancer.
Screening women with dense breast tissue for breast cancer. Unlike mammography, MRI imaging is not affected by dense breast tissue, making it very effective in finding cancer in dense breasts.
Evaluating a new diagnosis of breast cancer. MRI can be used to determine the size and scope of the breast cancer, if there are other abnormalities in the same breast or in the other breast, and if there is enlargement of the lymph nodes that may indicate the spread of cancer.
Evaluating chemotherapy response before surgery. In some cases, breast cancer will be treated with chemotherapy before it is removed surgically.
Since MRI uses a very strong magnet, metal on or inside the body may be affected; therefore, be sure to tell your scheduler and MRI Technologist. This includes medically implanted devices and other objects such as shrapnel, bullets and foreign objects.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
Stereotactic breast biopsy is a form of image-guided biopsy that uses mammography to help your radiologist locate an abnormality, then guide a core-sampling needle to the area to remove a small amount of tissue. This tissue sample is then sent to a lab for analysis.
